Andrew Blanchard scored his 1,000th point for the Engadine Eagles Varsity when the basketball team was at Big Bay de Noc January 29. He was presented a 1,000- point basketball during a short ceremony between the JV game and the Varsity game a few days later on Friday, February 1.

“He has been our cornerstone in building our program,” declared Eagle coach Walter Hanson. “The year prior to his arrival, we didn’t win a single game. The next year we brought him up as freshman and won two games, and gave Newberry a scare in Districts. The following year, things started to change and he blossomed into a fantastic basketball player. He helped our team win the districts (a huge upset over Brimley).”

“Andrew lives in the gym,” confirmed Hanson. ”He’s always the first to call or text.... He’s there almost every day, setting the example and working to perfect his craft. AAU has helped him to see different aspects of the game and has truly made him an all-round player.

Blanchard got a lot of awards for his football performance over the years, but basketball remains the sport he’s passionate about.

“He’ll make the best play on the court, often making a pass to a teammate before he shoots,” said Hanson “His knowledge of the game and ability to see the court is what enables him to score. Every coach hopes and prays they have a player like Andrew that comes around to help their program. He has solidified our culture as a team that works hard, plays tough defense and never gives up. I am forever grateful for that.”

Blanchard carries a 4.0 GPA and intends to play basketball at Alma College next fall.

“Andrew and I have been through a lot of ups and downs, and through those experiences we’re able to read each other’s minds,” Hanson added. “He knows what I’m thinking and I’m able to see what he’s thinking. I’m super proud of him and there’s no player more deserving.”
