Oswald’s Bears 12 UB Hockey Team U.P. Champs


Oswald’s Bear Pee Wee Hockey team—U.P. Champs Oswald’s Bear Pee Wee Hockey team—U.P. Champs For the fourth year in a row the group of hockey players currently on the Oswald’s Bear Ranch 12 and under boys’ hockey team from Newberry are the U.P. District 8 Champs.

This group won twice as Squirts and now twice as Pee Wees. This year’s tournament was played at the Houghton Arena in Hancock.

The Bears first beat the Keweenaw Bay team 11—2 last Friday, February 1; bested the Iron Range team 9—0 Saturday morning, February 2; and then defeated the Escanaba team 8—1 Saturday afternoon.

The next day Oswald’s took on Calumet in the semi-finals and won 7—1 before facing the Public Service Garage team from Marquette in the Championship.

Conner Carson put the first goal in the net for Newberry early in the first period of the Championship game, but the Marquette team tied it up before the end of the first.

A couple of penalties called against Marquette gave the Newberry team a power play of four on three (Newberry had a player in the penalty box as well), but Matt Rahilly took advantage with a goal at 10:27 of the second period. This gave Newberry a 2—1 lead.

Eighteen seconds later, Rahilly scored again to put the Bears on top 3—1.

Jason Smith fired in a goal for the Public Service Garage team to climb back to within one, but Rahilly took the air out of its tires with his third goal of the game.

Oswald’s Bears scored two more times in the third period, giving them a 6—2 victory and the District 8 Championship.

The team will travel to the State Finals in Fraser, Michigan, March 1, 2, & 3.
